The mission of the Department of Microbiology is to promote good quality education and inspiring training in different disciplines of Microbiology. To create an innovative, creative study environment to the students. To train the students excels in both practical and theoretical aspects of Microbiology. Motivate and guide the students to develop new techniques in Microbiology .Equipping students, with excellence in education and skills to enable them pursue a career of their choice. Cultivating talents and promoting all round personality development through multi-dimensional education to foster a spirit of self –confidence and self-reliance in our students. To prepare them to become responsible contributing citizens of society, who can take up leadership positions around the globe.

Provide a compelling and relevant Microbiology curriculum that will train students at high level of scientific literacy and impart appropriate skill test.

Provide personalized mentoring that provides the necessary support for students to develop progress to timely completion of their Masters and Ph.D degrees.

Develop alternative avenues for graduate education to provide opportunities for a diverse student population.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

• The department has been established in the academic year 1996-97.The department offers core and elective courses in microbiology it is a constant endeavor of the department to offer such courses that acquaints students with technical and theoretical knowledge.
• The department promotes research works and possess well equipped lab. The department has state of the art infrastructure. The sincere aim of the department is to equip the students with skills knowledge and values that will help them turn in to successful and upright personalities.
• Microbes are playing important role in the all living things and maintain homeostasis of the universe.
• Without microbe one cannot imagine such a biologically balanced and diverse universe; rather out earth would have placed as barren planet.
• As the microbial activities are so diverse, the microbiology programme is a multidisciplinary subject, which will have the roots of life science, environmental science, and engineering.
• Modern microbiology has expanded its roots in Genome technology, Nano biotechnology, Green Energy Technology etc.
• Considering recent innovations and rapid growth of microbiological approaches and applications in human and environmental sustainability, the B.Sc curricula is designed to enlighten the students in basics of Microbiology to recent developments.

PROGRAMME: B.Sc -MICROBIOLOGY

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:

• Knowledge on the understanding of the concepts and fundamental principles of Microbiology.
• Basic knowledge to deal with the study of genetic, metabolic strategies and ecology of microbes.
• Basic knowledge of the main microbiological techniques to be applied in the lab.

POGRAMME OUTCOME:

B.Sc. (Microbiology) upon completion of programme, the students will be able to:

• Perform the basic techniques related to screening, isolation and cultivation of microorganisms from various sources
• Study the microorganism with regard to morphology, cultural and biochemical characters. It will help to classify the microbes to certain extent.
• Follow the aseptic techniques and conduct the process of sterilization as well as perform thetechniques to control the microorganism
• Understand microorganisms and their relationship with the environment,
• Produce and analyze the microbial products at laboratory level
• Conduct the basic research with these microorganisms and perform the diagnostic procedures required in food, milk and pharmaceutical
industries.

B.SC- Microbiology - IIIrd year students visited Central Leprosy Research Institute, Chengalpattu.

B.SC- Microbiology - IIIrd year students,Sathya and Yuvraj has participated in State level Conference titled “Impact of biological Sciences on society” conducted by Chennai National Arts & Science College, Avadi.
